If you don't get an outside seat, don't worry, you won't be missing much and the ride is VERY short. They advertise that seating is first come first served, but to board the train they were telling people to go to the front and fill all the seats up in a line. My advice is to stand at the far end toward the train so you can be one of the first people to the train when the presentation is over. To start they give a little informative talk about the pipeline. They don't even open the gate until after 9:00. Other than that, there isn't much need to get there early. Getting there before the buses is the only way to get good pictures of the pipeline. There were about 8 of us total plus 4 tour buses. We were one of the few solo travelers on this excursion. There is also coffee and hot chocolate in the gift shop. We would have liked a tiny bottle to display our gold in, but opted for a magnet instead while our daughter made a cute charm bracelet with hers. When you finish, there is a gift shop where you can weigh your find, and buy souvenirs. While everyone is panning, staff walk around offering assistance where needed and are very helpful without being overbearing. When you arrive at the dredge, you are given a bag of dirt and a pan and are able to experience the excitement of panning for yourself. The short train ride out to the dredge was informative, with staff giving a detailed history of the area's mining operations and just what the dredge was. While boarding the train, we were treated to a great performance by Earl. The experience starts out with an introduction to the area and some explanation of the oil pipeline that runs through it. From the moment you arrive, you are immersed in the experience with friendly staff dressed in old time miner clothes.
